This week we introduce Just Curvy Crush Vera Mindy Chokalingam, otherwise known by her screen name, Mindy Kaling. Here, we explore the multi-faceted character of the Indian beauty, who not only absolutely kills it in her roles in the American sitcom The Office and her own show The Mindy Project, but also as a creator, showrunner, comedian, producer, and promoter of body positivity – talk about a super woman!
Relocating from the hustle and bustle of New York to Los Angeles, the hometown of Hollywood stars, Mindy has experienced quite a few setbacks but also kickstarts to her career in TV. Mindy saw that many shows “literally do not have a series regular of colour”, and amongst a majorly male cast in The Office, she became determined to bust through the Hollywood mould and pioneer an Indian-American-female led TV show – cue The Mindy Project.
Initially, Mindy faced multiple rejections, claiming that she was “not considered attractive or funny enough” to play herself, until she was finally given her lucky break. Who better to play Mindy than Mindy herself!?
Using her star status through TV and social media, Mindy teaches us that what is just as important as how we see ourselves is how we make others feel. Mindy tells that she is always asked how she gains her confidence, which she personally sees as an insult: “You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?” However, we, of all people, know that there are different sizes on the spectrum of curvy and there are lots of healthy definitions of beauty, so maybe we should stop seeing people as just bodies and embrace everyone.
Still, Mindy offers her go-to guide to killer confidence; hard work, bravery, and girl power. Last of all, while laughter is often a great medicine for body image, we should make sure comedy is never demeaning – points we will promise to keep in mind. Thanks, Mindy!
